Integrated Loudness: dive into a key feature of Immersive Master Pro.

Integrated loudness. You may have heard of this, and if you’re working in an immersive audio format like Dolby Atmos, you’ve probably heard that there are guidelines for delivering content at a specific loudness target. ADM files have as many as 128 audio channels, so measuring the loudness of a mix that is spread out across that many channels can be challenging. Fortunately, there is a standard method agreed upon in the industry. An immersive master is downmixed to 5.1, and that 5.1 mix is measured. The Dolby Atmos Renderer works this way, and so does Immersive Master Pro. We refer to the measurement as LKFS, and you might also see LUFS. Those two terms are interchangeable and are a measure of the exact same thing.

While mixing and preparing media for distribution, you’ll see that the integrated loudness reading in Immersive Master Pro very closely aligns with the Dolby Atmos Renderer. But with a couple of important distinctions:

  1. Immersive Master Pro displays integrated loudness with two decimals of precision.

  2. Immersive Master Pro can compute the loudness of hundreds of master files at a time, which is very convenient when preparing albums with many tracks, television shows with many episodes, or doing QC operations.

For more information on how we measure and display loudness, take a look at our FAQ/software manual, and download a 30-day demo of Immersive Master Pro here.
